The Right Stuff

Hi everyone

Welcome to this edition of your Gardening Weekly, today's edition is entitled:

The Right Stuff

QUOTE: In the hope of reaching the moon men fail to see the flowers that blossom at their feet.
- Albert Schweitzer

One of the most important rules of creating a garden is to ensure that you have the right plants for the right place.

There are many plants that will suffer if they aren't growing in conditions that are suited to them and by planting in these conditions you will always be fighting a battle to have them looking their best simply because they will always be struggling to survive.

If you have a specific theme that you would like to follow when planning your garden and that theme doesn't suit the growing conditions you only have two alternatives and they are;

1. you can change the plants you intend using to something more suitable but still in keeping with your overall theme or
2. you can change the conditions that the plants will be growing in.

While it is not possible to change the climate, you can make changes to the layout of the garden and surrounding area to create your own 'micro-climate' with other plants or trees offering shading or shelter.

You can plant windbreaks or construct them to reduce the effect that the wind might have on some of the more fragile plants.

If you are looking for color in your garden but the plants you prefer would suffer in the conditions your garden presents, then look for alternative plants that can offer the same color but are more suited to those conditions.

By using plants that are more suited to the conditions, they will thrive better and require a lot less maintenance while still giving you the 'look' you require.

It's all about getting your planning right before you even buy the first plants.  If the plan is well executed the garden will look better, be easier to maintain and you will enjoy ownership more so than a garden that is a constant struggle.

Ground Cover

Hi everyone

Welcome to this edition of your Gardening Weekly, today's edition is entitled:

Ground Cover

QUOTE: There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments
- Janet Kilburn Phillips

Ground cover has many different uses in the garden.  It can be used to help reduce the amount of weeds that will appear in the garden by covering over the space between plants where the weeds might grow.

There is a downside to this though, as weeding can become a bit more difficult when you need to remove the weeds that will still invariably grow in amongst the ground cover.

Ground cover can also help to keep the moisture in the soil by stopping it from drying out from direct sunlight.

It can also add color and texture to the garden.  A lot of the ground cover that is available can supply a splash of color right throughout the year where some will have color in their leaves and then additional color when they flower.
Being so close to the ground they can stay in better condition in windy conditions where they aren't quite so exposed as other flowering plants.

Most ground cover is quite durable and it is an excellent way to add color to gardens that are in conditions where other flowering plants might not survive.

Some ground cover plants grow very well and thrive in shaded areas where other plants might struggle to survive and they generally require very little maintenance.

They are also excellent for creating borders around gardens where there are larger plants or trees growing or where other plants won't be able to get sufficient nutrition to grow to their full potential.

They are particular good for covering areas that are not easily accessible and would normally be too hard to maintain if you were to attempt to grow other plants there.  They also make a nice display when grown in and around rocks and sculptures in the garden and can make a nice mat when grown at the foot of a garden seat, provided of course that you choose one that is durable enough to withstand light foot traffic.

Progress

It is SO windy here right now. I almost got hit by a flying shingle or something on my walk home from work. The wind tore loose one end of our hoop house and the flapping plastic absolutely demolished our tester tomato plant.
